First things first, Lisa: who is Mrs S?
Sarah Schwikkard is the café's namesake. She opened Mrs S in November 2010, and started with just cakes and coffee. Now we have three chefs and a full-time baker and with each menu we try to push our boundaries a little more.
What's killing it on the menu right now?
The orange-blossom pearl barley pudding is proving really popular. It's a hot, sweet breakfast item that's cooked like risotto and made using full-cream milk, citrus and orange blossom. We've also started serving it with homemade honeycomb and a tahini paste for something a little bit different. We've been working on caramelised beef short ribs with a nahm jim dressing which we're getting ready to launch.
What sets Mrs S apart from your average café?
We like to use seasonal produce and change the menu as often as possible. We aim to cook creative and delicious things that our guests don't have the time to cook for themselves at home.
What about when you're entertaining at home - do you have a failsafe brunch dish?
We like serving a mixture of enoki, field and button mushrooms, a poached egg and haloumi on some nice sourdough. It's quick and easy and leaves us free to enjoy our guests' company.
