REVIEW
There’s romance aplenty in the Old-World grandeur of gilt-edged mirrors and stained-glass windows, and the genial Italian-accented waitstaff. Traditional Roman dishes are given a modern flourish, whether it’s lightly battered zucchini flowers yielding anchovy dotted mozzarella or saltimbocca alla Romana, elegant as it gets, the veal edged with fine prosciutto and scattered with fried sage and broccolini. Perhaps best of all are the pasta dishes – gnocchi has remained a fixture for years, and with good reason. Pan-fried in a cheesy sauce, the gnocchi is flecked with just the right amount of truffle shavings and fennel flavour from chunks of rustic sausage. The Italian-focused drinks list is also old-fashioned in all the right ways, showcasing minimal-intervention wines from small producers. A short list of desserts also appeals – perhaps a lovely vanilla panna cotta with pineapple and shortbread will do the trick.
