Food writing school at Ricky & Pinky

Budding food writers, here's your chance to hone your craft with Larissa Dubecki and Michael Harden in an evening class as part of Melbourne's Emerging Writers' Festival.

The class, hosted at Andrew McConnell's Cantonese-inspired venue Ricky & Pinky in Fitzroy, will also include a six-course tasting menu to get senses buzzing and pencils scribbling. Night school has never sounded so fun.

Dubecki and Harden (both regular GT contributors) have a combined 30 years of experience writing about food and restaurants. Together they will guide 38 aspiring critics through a discussion of ArChan Chan's tasting menu, beginning with cucumbers and radishes in chilli oil, raw kingfish, a shiitake and spinach dumpling course and soup, followed by kung pao chicken with baby gai lan, finishing with a lychee granita with coconut and apple.

Aside from the specifics of each dish, students will be encouraged to think about their surroundings and atmosphere, in this case the vibrant Sibling-designed interiors of Ricky & Pinky providing ample material for discussion. Harden and Dubecki will also alert you to the cultural or historical details that are relevant to food reviewing.
